Illegal Immigration in The USA: A Quick Modest Proposal

The U.S. government should reform the current immigration system by legalizing the approximately 11.3 millions of “illegal immigrants” because of its positive economic impact in the long term; and after legalization is granted, the government should reinforce border security laws. Furthermore, this proposal is divided into four steps.

First, to deport all illegal immigrants with a criminal background that doesn’t imply being “illegal” as a crime.

Second, to legalize all the remaining aliens subdivided in two groups by the age they entered the country, before and after 18. By providing Social Security, and Green Card with a path to citizenship to the first group, and by providing Social Security, and Work Permit with a path only to a Green Card for the second one.

Third, after legalization is done, it is mandatory to reinforce deportation laws from and within the borders to avoid future illegal immigration. Therefore, local, state and federal government should work as one to accomplish this job.

Fourth, in case amnesty and conciliation are done; the teaching of this moment should be mandatory in public schools in order to do not forget the value of immigrants and the enforcement of the law if deportation is needed.

Finally, regardless of any political ideology, there should be an act of courage from both parties, Democrats and Republicans, to recognize that legalization and law enforcement can be made if they could only leave their pride aside. They have the power, technology, and economic resources to bring a solution to this problematic; and they should do it because they own it to the American people, and to the immigrants of this great nation.

After all, we are all One Nation; under God…
